Summer ski

In addition to the very long ski season (from november to May) as there is in Bad Gastein, it is also possible to go summer skiiing.

Mölltaler Gletscher - Flattach

The closest glacier is the Mölltaler glacier. The glacier is "just behind" Kreuzkogel in Sportgastein, but you have to enter it from the south. If you want to try the Mölltaler glacier take the car train from Böckstein to Mallnitz.

Read much more about the glacier at http://www.gletscher.co.at/.

Kitzsteinhorn - Kaprun

Nearby (45 min. by car) is in Kaprun on the Kitzsteinhorn glacier. It is an excellent glacier - not that steep, but quite ok for a some summer skiing.

On the interactive map over the kitzsteinhorn glacier you can get an idea of size and conditions. Read more at www.kitzsteinhorn.at.

Hintertux

A - in our opinion - better glacier (for better skiers) is the Hintertux glacier. It is slightly larger and offers greater challenges (steeper). Unfortunately it is a bit further away than the Kitzsteinhorn (2.5 hours by car).

A good idea is to visit Gerlos on your way to Hintertux. There you can see the spectacle Krimml Waterfalls (the highest waterfalls in Europe).

Dachstein

A 75 minutes drive from Bad Gastein is also Dachstein-glacier. Unfortunately we have not yet tried this glacier (we would like to hear if someone has). Read more at www.planai.at/dachstein/.

Check the weather and snow conditions

If you plan to go summer skiing we recommend you that you examine the weather forecast and snow conditions on the glacier. (though it is summer weather can be very bad on a glacier).

Summer skiiing can be a bit of a lottery - it can be pure slushice, pure ice or simply perfect conditions with perferct snow.

But whatever it is always a special experience to take a lift up to over 3000 meters altitude mid-summer to go skiing.
